Michael Bowker

As you can read in the Intro to my book, Michael Bowker's No Ordinary Days, I grew up in Kansas, in part on an isolated farm where my only pals were the characters in the books my dad read to me every night.  I drove an old Ford out to Seattle when I was 17 and attended the University of Washington. I ultimately gained degrees in journalism and environmental science. I wanted to play on the PGA Tour so I moved to California to get more sunshine. After a few stressful years I left my golf dreams to pick up something I loved even more -- writing.

I worked as a reporter and editor of a Nor Cal newspaper for a few years, then started freelancing.  I did that for about 15 years, working for the LA Times, Reader's Digest, Outside Magazine, Golf Magazine, Science, Popular Science, Health, and every major newspaper in California. I wrote about six stories a month in those days for more than 100 different publications.

In 2000, I battled 40 far more qualified applicants and was given the job as speech writer and 'message consultant' for the Speaker of the California State Assembly -- the second most powerful politician in the state.  He later became a two-term Mayor of Los Angeles.  I had some crazy adventures during those times, my office was on the top floor of the State Capitol Building in Sacramento.  I wrote about 250 speeches for the Speaker, the Governor, a couple of Senators and a few others.  As a journalist I got to see "how the sausages were made" in the back rooms filled with politicians.  Was great fun.

I moved south after that and was hired as executive editor of one of the largest business magazines in the country.  After a few years I left the magazine and freelanced again.  I wrote a humor column for a local paper -- once I even gave dating advice, warning everyone that taking dating advice from me was a lot like taking sailing lessons from the Captain of the Titanic.  It was all fun.

Along the way, I've written 21 books (Simon & Schuster, Random House, etc.) and I once testified before the US Senate against some nasty things some giant corporations were doing to their workers and customers.  My books range all over the place in terms of topics -- I always do what sounds fun and worthwhile.

MY CURRENT BOOK, just released, MICHAEL BOWKER'S NO ORDINARY DAYS, is a collection of my favorite 25 stories out of the 4,500 articles I've written in my career.  These include true crime (serial killers), stories of heroes, environmental investigations and some outdoor adventures.  The book contains a great deal of humor.

Time Magazine wrote:  "Beautiful writing, a must read."

Reader's Digest said:  "Bowker always captivated our worldwide audience."

Publisher's Weekly wrote:  "Bowker writes in a riveting and compelling style."

Sacramento Magazine said my writing is "mesmerizing."
